Depression

What Is Depression?
Depression is more than feeling sad or having a difficult day. Depression, also called major depressive disorder (MDD), is a common and treatable mental health condition that can affect mood, thoughts, energy, sleep, appetite, relationships, and daily functioning.
Everyone experiences periods of sadness or disappointment. Depression, however, tends to be more persistent and can make it difficult to enjoy things you once found meaningful. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.
Depression is not a sign of weakness, and you do not have to face it alone. With appropriate treatment and support, many people with depression experience significant improvement and regain their quality of life.
Common Symptoms of Depression
Depression can affect people differently. Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or feeling down
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
- Low energy or persistent fatigue
- Changes in sleep, including insomnia or sleeping too much
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness
- Irritability or increased frustration
- Moving or speaking more slowly, or feeling unusually restless
- Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities
- Difficulty keeping up with work, school, or daily responsibilities
- Thoughts of death, suicide, or self-harm
Not everyone with depression experiences every symptom.
What Causes Depression?
Depression does not have one single cause. It can develop from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
Possible contributing factors include:
- Family history and genetics
- Changes in brain function and chemistry
- Chronic stress
- Trauma or difficult life experiences
- Major life changes or loss
- Medical conditions
- Hormonal changes
- Certain medications or substances
- Sleep problems
- Other mental health conditions
Sometimes depression develops even when there is no obvious reason. Experiencing depression does not mean you have done anything wrong.
When Should You Seek Help?
Consider speaking with a mental health professional if sadness, loss of interest, hopelessness, low energy, or other symptoms persist or begin interfering with your relationships, work, school, sleep, or daily activities.
Early evaluation and treatment can help prevent symptoms from becoming more difficult to manage and can support recovery.
How Is Depression Diagnosed?
Depression is diagnosed through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Your provider may discuss your symptoms, how long they have been present, their impact on your daily life, medical history, medications, sleep, substance use, and other factors that may affect your mental health.
Screening tools such as the PHQ-9 may be used to help assess the severity of depressive symptoms. Your provider may also evaluate for other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, including anxiety, bipolar disorder, medical conditions, or medication-related effects.
Treatment for Depression
Depression is treatable, and treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, diagnosis, medical history, preferences, and goals.
Treatment may include:
- Psychotherapy, including evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Medication management
- Lifestyle and behavioral changes
- Stress-management and coping strategies
- Patient education and supportive care
- A combination of treatments
Treatment may take time, and finding the right approach may require ongoing communication and follow-up with your healthcare provider.
